How to Dutch Fishtail Braid

By A Mystery Man Writer

We’re going back to the basics and learning the classic dutch fishtail braid. Fishtail braids can be one of the easiest braids to master but also one of the most time-consuming. This style of braid incorporates hair into both sides by crossing the sections underneath instead of over the top creating a “dutch” braided effect versus the traditional “french” version. I didn’t come up with the names but it’s how I remember the difference between the two. If you’ve been wanting to learn, I am sharing two ways to wear it so check out the video below and let me know which style you like best! How to Dutch Fishtail Braid: Step 1 / Begin by brushing the hair straight back from the hairline. Step 2 / Divide off a section at the top of the head and split it into two equal pieces. Step 3 / Take a small piece from the outside edge of the section on the right side, cross it underneath and add it into the section on the left side. Step 4 / Divide off a small section from the outer edge on the left side, cross it underneath and incorporate it into the section on the right. Step 5 / Cross a small section from the right side under to the left. Then pick up a new section of hair from the right side of the head, cross it underneath adding it into the left side. Step 6 / Cross a small piece from the left side under to the right. Pick up a new section of hair from the left side of the head, cross it underneath the left section adding it into the right half. Step 7 / Repeat steps 5 and 6 crossing small sections under to the opposite side and incorporating hair into the braid until the braid reaches the nape of the neck and all of the hair is brought in. Step 8 / Now braid the rest of the section to the bottom in a regular braid, crossing small sections under to the opposite side until reaching the ends. Step 9 / Tie off the braid with a clear elastic band. Step 10 / Gently pull on the edges of the braid to make it wider and more full and smooth down any flyaways with hairspray. How to Dutch Fishtail Braid on the left side: Step 1 / Start by creating a deep side part on the left side of the head. Step 2 / Brush through the hair to remove any tangles and sweep all of the hair over the left shoulder. Step 3 / Pick up a small slice of hair on the heavy side of the part and split it into two equal sections. Step 4 / Alternately cross a small piece from each side underneath to the opposite side. Step 5 / Continue crossing small sections under to the opposite sides while also incorporating new sections into the braid. Step 6 / Work the braid down the left side of the head and when bringing in hair along the right side of the braid, sweep them across the back of the head while maintaining the parting. Step 7 / Once all of the hair is brought into the braid, continue a regular fishtail braid down to the ends of the sections. Step 8 / Tie off the braid with a clear elastic band. Step 9 / Gently loosening the sides of the braid to make it fuller. Step 10 / Set the style with hairspray and smooth down flyaways.
